My System Configuration

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 that I received on April 2nd 1998. The original configuration was as follows:

  • 13.3" Screen
  • 233MHz MMx Intel Processor
  • 4.1GB Hard Drive formatted for FAT 16 with 3 partitions
  • 32MB RAM (16MB soldered on and 1 16MB module)
  • Windows 95B OSR2
  • Office 97 SR1 Professional Edition
  • 3COM ( 3C562D-3C563D ) 10/100EtherLink III LAN + 33.6 Modem Combo Card
  • Hewlett Packard 722C DeskJet Printer
  • Iomega parallel port Zip 100 Drive

When I received my computer the first thing I did was to run the Dell Program Disk Maker so that I would have all of the original drivers. Next I installed my parallel port zip drive, did a total system backup, and set the attributes on those disks for read only. I also made a boot disk and copied all of the Windows 95 CAB files onto a zip disk.

I then proceeded to fdisk my hard drive for one partition and format it for FAT32. I created a new directory on C drive named setups, hooked up the zip drive and using the guest program copied the Windows 95 CAB files into the setups directory. I was now able to install Windows 95 from C drive. At this point I installed my combo card, zip drive, and printer. The combo card gave me a few problems and I finally has to do a flash upgrade of the firmware. Finally I installed:

  • Internet Explorer 4.0
  • Microsoft Plus for Windows 95
  • Office 97 SR1 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Works 4.5
  • Norton Utilities 3.0
  • Norton AntiVirus 4.0
  • Netscape Navigator 4.08

I have since installed the following programs/upgrades/patches without uninstalling any of the previously installed software:

  • Outlook 98
  • Office SR2 Patch
  • Internet Explorer 4.01 SP-1
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 Beta
  • Windows 98
  • Microsoft Plus for Windows 98
  • Norton Utilities 4.0
  • Norton AntiVirus 5.0
  • Norton CleanSweep 4.5
  • Symantec WinFax Pro 9.0
  • Office 2000 Beta Premium Edition
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 Final Release
  • Netscape Communicator 4.61
  • Removed Office 2000 Beta and reinstalled Office 97 SR-1 Premium Edition, Outlook 98, FrontPage 98, and the Office SR2 Patch
  • Installed retail Office 2000 Premium Edition over Office 97, Outlook 98, and FrontPage 98
  • Norton System Works 2000
  • Symantec WinFax Pro 9.0

I have also installed all of the various updates, patches, and fixes that Microsoft and Symantec have released for their products whenever they became available or I learned about them. These include Y2K patches, security patches/fixes, and general program upgrades.

In addition to the above listed major programs I also have numerous smaller programs installed which include, but are not limited to:

  • RealPlayer G2
  • VivoActive Player
  • Windows MediaPlayer
  • MacroMedia ShockWave
  • MacroMedia Flash Player
  • Corel Print and Photo House
  • Fleet PC Banking
  • Microsoft Money 99 Basic
  • Microsoft BookShelf 2000
  • Microsoft Money 2000 Deluxe
  • Stamps.com Postage Software

I have upgraded the memory to 144MB, the maximum amount that the BIOS will recognize. I have also upgraded my hard drive to 6.4GB using a KanguruParallel adapter kit and PowerQuest's DriveCopy. Details on the hard drive upgrade can be found here.
